Employment positions include administrative, research, curatorial, retail, merchandising, public relations, security and special events. Research and curatorial positions in particular provide the opportunity to work with leading scholars, historians, scientists and artists.

Oral Fix Aphrodisiac Bar and Café

The Museum of Sex is currently seeking an intelligent, energetic and enthusiastic individual interested in joining the staff of the nation’s first Museum dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Human Sexuality.

Applications are currently being accepted for a position at Oral Fix Aphrodisiac Bar and Café.

Daily tasks may include:
  • Assisting customers in accordance to daily operations of the bar. This includes making drinks, plating foods, and having an up-to-date knowledge of the food and beverages served
  • Assisting customers with knowledge of the museum as a whole, as well as general inquiries about the neighborhood and attractions
  • Using the point of sale system to accurately ring-up sales and accept payments
  • Accurately maintain cash drawer and make daily deposits
  • Clean dishes and restock display cases as needed
  • Light cooking to maintain our stock of simple syrup and specialty elixirs
  • Perform coat check duties as needed
  • Help with special events, parties and lectures
  • Assist other Museum Departments, including Administrative Offices and Security
  • Maintain café appearance and stay in accordance with health code
Requirements:
  • Applicants should be punctual, hard working and adaptable individuals.
  • All bar staff will be required to receive the New York Alcohol safety certification. It is not required at the time of application, though encouraged.
  • Food Safety Certification a plus
  • Food/Beverage handling experience a plus

Visitor Services & Retail Assistant

Applications are currently being accepted for a Visitor Services & Retail Assistant position.

As a Visitor Services & Retail Assistant, daily tasks may include:

Visitor Services Tasks:
  • Assist museum visitors, explaining policies, providing directions about the neighborhood and local attractionsCompleting Ticket Sales using the ticketing system according to established procedures
  • Accurately maintain cash drawers and make daily deposits
  • Create Daily reports
  • Accurately complete ticket sales using the ticketing system according to established procedures
  • Provide accurate information to guests about the museum, membership, products, and local attractions
  • Help with special events, parties and lectures
  • Assist other Museum Departments, including Administrative Offices and Security

Retail Services:

  • Using the Point-of-Sale system to accurately make sales
  • Handling food and beverage in the Museum’s cafe
  • Assisting in merchandising efforts, displays and floor moves
  • Perform stock and coat check duties needed
  • Continue to build product knowledge that will be helpful to guests
  • Assist in merchandising efforts, displays, floor moves, and inventory
  • Assist with receiving and preparing products for placement on floor (stickering, packaging, etc.)
  • Initiate projects that aid in store operations when business is slow
  • Maintain store appearance and organization of merchandise
  • Completing Mail Order and Phone Order Sales

Requirements:
  • Applicants should be punctual, hard working, organized and adaptable individuals.
  • Applicants should possess both Strong Communication and Critical Thinking Skills.
  • Applicants should be problem solvers and possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Food and beverage handling a huge plus.

Security


The Museum of Sex is currently seeking an intelligent, energetic and enthusiastic individual interested in joining the staff of the nation’s first Museum dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Human Sexuality.

Applications are currently being accepted for a Security Guard position.

As a Security Guard, daily tasks may include:

  • Patrolling assigned areas
  • Effectively handling escalated situations
  • Accurately maintain cash drawers and make daily deposits
  • Monitoring entry into the Museum
  • Accurately complete ticket sales using the ticketing system according to established procedures
  • Assisting museum visitors, explaining policies, providing directions throughout the Museum and store
  • Maintain the appearance of the Museum
  • Opening and Closing the Museum

Requirements:
  • Applicants should be capable of standing for an entire shift
  • Applicants should be able to effectively de-escalate a situation
  • Applicants should be problem solvers and possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Curatorial and Collections Intern


The Museum of Sex, the first cultural institution of its kind, devoted to the historical, artistic, and cultural discourse surrounding sex and sexuality, is seeking collections/curatorial interns.

As a cultural institution, we are able to provide our interns with practical experience. This is an ideal internship for someone continuing their education either at the undergraduate or graduate level, as well as those interested in exposure to all aspects of the running of a small cultural institution.

Collections/Curatorial Interns will assist the Exhibitions Department by:

  • Conducting exhibition related research
  • Reading exhibition related materials and delivering thoughtful summary reports
  • Developing a working knowledge of the Museum of Sex collection
  • Assisting with onsite installations
  • Helping with exhibition-related loan agreements and rights
  • Meticulously cataloging objects and storing them safely
  • Opening and Closing the Museum
  • Assisting in managing the organization, safety and longevity of objects
  • Performing onsite artifact and exhibition maintenance

Requirements:
Qualified candidates should have a background in museum studies, library science and/or sex, sexuality and gender studies. Applicants should have excellent research and writing skills. Additionally, ideal applicants should be organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented, professional, and possess basic computer skills. We are looking for a time commitment of between 15-25 hours per week. We can offer course credit for this internship.

Compensation: While this is an unpaid internship, this position has the possibility of growing into a paid position.
